A Freestanding Minimalist
J Smith (California) 3/21/2017 5:51 PM
Every time I set this up, I'm impressed by Big Sky's balance of durability, weight and size. While light, the materials are top-notch — you sense this immediately — and the sewing work is top notch. Complimenting the quality materials are a thoughtful selection of components and an adherence to a design philosphy that privileges simplicity over unnecessary features. In every case, the Soul avoids adding "just a little more" and in so doing winds up with a something will appeal to the true minimalists among us. One example is the vestibule, which features just a single backpacker's worth of square footage. These guys could have easily added more by extending the poles out further, or doing something with the fly on the sides, but that would increase the footprint, which would work against being able to nestle the tent in between stuff when pitching it, which was one of the main reasons I bought it. Same with the simple pocket and the subtle loops along the ceiling of the interior. And then we have the door, which allows for the most comfortable entry and exit I've ever experienced in a tent, made possible by simply taking advantage of the innovative shape of the interior. But the best thing — expecially for the desert skies where I typically sleep out — is the option to tie the fly in a semi-covered configuration, keeping it at the ready for whatever might come, but surrounded by sky in the meantime. It's a very considered approach, and it's the Soul's definitive feature. Oh also, since I'm coming into my first summer with it, I should mention that I'm looking forward to leaving the interior home — the fact that it can pitch using the fly, the poles and the webbing/footprint is not an entirely uncommon feature, but you also don't find it on every tent in this weight class. Overall, this tent makes me more motivated to spend time outside, which is of course the highest compliment you can pay a piece of gear. Thanks Bob!
